An Interview with Dave Kumlien

A Battle Royal in the Great Lakes

  We have reported often about the high stakes and high profile battle being waged to try and prevent Asian carp from entering into the GreatAsian carp Lakes.  In the past month developments have been fast and furious. In December, the state of Michigan filed a suit with the US Supreme Court to force Illinois to close the locks on the river that connects Lake Michigan to carp infested waters. The suit was soon joined by Minnesota and Wisconsin and supported by Ontario Canada.  However, on the other side, the Obama administration sided with Illinois.  Read More

  On January 19, the Supreme Court issued a one sentence judgment that they would not order an immediate closure of the locks. However, they gave no indication if they would consider the case on its merits. Read More

  This has become the highest profile aquatic invasive issue we have ever seen and there are many daily articles and reports being published on this issue. At the Clean Angling News we will continue to pay close attention and will continue to provide updates in future issues.

If You Can't Beat Them, Eat Them!

  With all the recent attention to the problem of Asian Carp in the Great Lakes, we sometimes overlook the fact that theses same carp are already a huge problem in many areas. In an effort to get people to harvest these fish for food and a new campaign has kicked off to name them "Silverfin" and make them a staple food fish.  Read More

Cooked Silverfin    Chef Philippe Parola, who is leading the effort to develop a commercial market for Silverfin, describes the flavor as “a cross between scallops and crabmeat.” He has written a complete account of how he became interested in this.  Read More

   The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is actively silverfin consumption and they have put together some excellent information on how to prepare them for eating, including a video that demonstrates how to properly handle and fillet the fish. Read More


Massive Weed Beds Threaten Popular Texas Lake

Salvinia infestation  Stretching miles long and hundreds of yards wide, huge “rafts” of Giant Salvinia and water hyacinth  moved into Toledo Bend Reservoir following heavy rains that washed the weeds from the shallows. The weed mats are slowly moving through the reservoir and Texas officials are racing to provide a rapid response. Read More

Predicting the New Year

   As 2009 came to a close it was time for fly fishing predictions for 2010 and invasive species seem to be on the minds of a lot more people.

    Midcurrent.com asked a number of prominent fly fishing  celebrities to make a  prediction for 2010 and several believe that invasive species impacts on the industry will be significant. Read More

   On the Field & Stream Fly Talk Blog, Kirk Deeter offers his predictions for 2010. Among other things he is looking for more states to implement bans on felt soles in the coming year. Read More


Zebra Mussel Mystery

   A new zebra mussel discovery in Arizona has everyone scratching their heads. Nothing logical can explain the presence of zebra mussel shells in the air conditioning unit of a boat that had been moored on a mussel free lake since its purchase. Read More


Don't Bring Your Boots To This Lodge

Lodge photo   The owners and guides at Chile's Patagonian BaseCamp Lodge and The Temple Camp take visiting anglers to some of the most pristine and remote fly fishing destinations in the world. To help protect these waters from invaders that might come on the boots of visiting anglers, the lodges have purchased dozens of pairs of Korkers boots and now only allow guests to use lodge supplied boots.
